If you are an athlete, you know how important it is to stay mentally focused. Staying mentally focused helps with confidence to perform your very best. When you doubt yourself, you will become more nervous. Your adrenaline will not work in your favor, but against you. Most of these issues are all in your head. You need to believe in yourself.

Some helpful exercises include breathing, counting, or repeating positive thoughts like, “ I can do this, I can do this.” Do not ever let a negative thought enter your head, if you say “don’t fall” falling is in your head, rather than thinking “ I can hit this skill” in which you will stay motivated to try your very best to do so.

As a two-time National Champion, I can relate to the nerves that performing on the matt or trying out for a team can bring to you. Anxiety can be your enemy if you let it control your mind. If you practice positive thinking with the right amount of practice and preparation that your body physically needs, then you will also be mentally prepared. I can personally say I have accomplished overcoming anxiety that tryouts and performing can bring because I have hit a routine at the collegiate level of cheerleading. UCA Nationals, NCA nationals, all-star nationals, no matter what competition, level, or age, every athlete can relate to performance anxiety. To get me through the stressful times preparing mentally and physically, I will often find myself reading motivational quotes from other professional athletes or champions.
