The best day of the year is upon us, which can only mean one thing.. It’s GAME DAY!! There’s no greater feeling than those Friday night lights beating down on you with a crisp, fall breeze lofting through the air, just enough to give you chills when you looks up into the stands and see the crowd of people on their feet. No, nothing can quite compare to that butterfly feeling you get in your stomach when you put on your uniform, grab your poms, and run out onto the field. But in order to best fire up the crowd, who will carry that electric energy to your team, you first have to light a spark within yourself.
Cheering in front of 107 thousand crazy and wild fans in Beaver Stadium is no small task, but with dedication, commitment, and a whole lot of passion, it may very well be the greatest experience on Earth (for a cheerleader, anyway). The only way you’re going to be able to jump up and down, through some flips, and keep yelling for all four quarters is if you’re wholeheartedly excited about your school and your team. The worst thing for a cheerleader to do when she is standing on the sidelines is look like bored, just waiting for the clock to tick down to zero. Whether it’s scorching hot or freezing cold, whether you’re super tired or are stressed out about your busy schedule, you have to put those things aside and focus on living in the moment and just having fun! When you look like you’re having a great time down on the sidelines, the crowd will feed off of your energy and cheer louder for your team!
But before you take the field, there are a few things you should do. The best way to prepare for game day is to review all your cheers and fight songs with your teammates before you go out on the field, because the last thing you want is to not know what you’re doing. What dance do you do when the football team scores a touch down? What cheer do you do if the other team is about to kick a field goal? Running through these scenarios in your head before you go out will make you feel more confident in a game-time situation when you have to think quick.
Next, just like the football team gets pumped up in their huddle, you need to pump yourself up, too! Play some upbeat tunes and jam out with your teammates before you run out on the field! It will get you hyped up, so you can hype the crowd up!
Now that you know your material and are excited about the game, there’s just one simple thing left to do – OWN IT!! Go out there and be confident in everything you do! Don’t worry about messing up or making a mistake, just focus on doing everything you can to rock out, because when you’re having a blast, the crowd will too!

Hi guys, I’m Alexa! I’ve been cheering since I was 8 years old, starting for my rec team, then all four years of high school at Delaware Valley Regional HS where we traveled down to Orlando to compete in UCA Nationals every year. My senior year of high school when I was a captain, we won the Medium Varsity Division II National Championship title, and it was my proudest moment as a cheerleader! I currently attend Penn State University where I am lucky enough to cheer in front of a crowd of 107,000 fans at football games and compete on our All-Girl team at UCA Nationals.
Go State!!
