Our ambassadors share with us their personal stories and obstacles they overcome along the way. We have an amazing community of athletes who fuel their passion and determination with the CHEERFIT lifestyle.

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

My most difficult challenge in cheer has been myself – my mental blocks and self doubts.

I am the only one who stands between accomplishing a certain skill. I have had to find my center focus and believe in myself as mush as my coaches believe in me. I practice non stop there is not a moment that goes by that I am not active in some way shape or form. I have goals and dreams for myself and I won’t stop until I they are met.

Fitness is so important in my journey – it helps me stay active, strong and healthy.

It helps correct my form and posture to throw a beautiful back tuck. It helps keep myself and my flyer safe when she’s up in the air. Overall the way it makes me feel is priceless . . .

– CHEERFIT Ambassador Camarie Johnson

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY VOLUNTEER OR NONPROFIT AND HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE OTHERS?

My favorite part about being a CHEERFIT ambassador is the getting fit part and being able to share that with others and also challenging myself to do more than I did yesterday.

HOW HAS BEING AN AMBASSADOR HELPED YOU?

Oh wow, it has helped me with so much, for starters – believing in myself! I can do anything I set my mind to and I have done just that. It has helped my tumbling, I have so much more strength to throw a tumble pass. I am stronger and am able to hold up my flyer longer. It has motivated me to keep going and never look back.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO TELL OTHER PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BECOME A CHEERFIT AMBASSADOR?

If you’re on the fence about it, just do it! You won’t regret it. You are automatically welcomed in like family. Just love who you are. . .

CHEERFIT AMBASSADOR FEATURE: JESSICA ZIOLKOWSKI

The CHEERFIT ambassador community is filled with leaders and motivators who all share a passion for fitness, love for cheering and drive to help inspire others.

Our ambassadors share with us their personal stories and obstacles they overcome along the way. We have an amazing community of athletes who fuel their passion and determination with the CHEERFIT lifestyle.

TELL US SOMETHING YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT OR A PERSONAL STORY/MESSAGE YOU’D LOVE TO SHARE WITH THE CHEERFIT COMMUNITY:

As athletes, we tend not to think about how we look – we just feel confident in our own skin. But sometimes that thought comes into our heads when we look on social media or looking in the mirror, and we ask ourselves “Am I fat?”, “Do I need to lose some weight?”. These questions get bigger and possibly more dangerous.

Body image is huge in today’s society . . . today’s society is full of judgement and hate. This topic hits home for me very well and maybe some of you. If you do not know who I am, I am Jessica Ziolkowski, I’m sixteen years old, and have been cheering for eleven years.

Since fifth grade I have been bullied for the way I walk, for maybe having a little Polish accent and being a bit special. To me, this was just a little thing that I thought would go away in middle school. Middle school was just a wreck for me, in eighth grade body image changed very quickly. Since we do have some younger ambassadors I will not mention what I had, but some medical issues that no one should ever go through because they think they need to lose weight.

It has been three years since all of this has happened and I am still recovering. If you had seen me even two years ago, you would be very surprised where I was in my life. I still did cheer, but I was not allowed to be on a level higher than a one, which is still a pretty impressive division in the cheer world. But to me, being on a level one meant I was never going to grow.

Everything did change – I started to love who I was, love how I looked, and most importantly did not let a number destroy my life anymore…

Here we are a couple years later, yes I am still recovering but eating healthy foods, working out to get better at the sport that I feel in love with, and of course being able to experience the life that I deserve. Weight is just a number that we all do care about, but is it really that important? As athletes we should not be worried about it.  CHEERFIT has helped me with this because it has given me the workout support that I needed. The workouts are safe and enough to help me get the muscle I need for cheer. It has also given me a community I can trust and always count on when I need that extra push. This is why I want to start this campaign – this topic is not talked about and it needs to be heard. CHEERFIT will be a part of this because we love to workout and get the body we love.

Thank you to everyone that took the time to read about this topic that needs to be heard. I am always here whenever anyone needs to talk or has a question. There is a quote I got from a friend when I was going through a difficult times, “God gives us the hardest challenges because he knows we can handle them.”

– CHEERFIT Ambassador Jessica Ziolkowski

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY VOLUNTEER OR NONPROFIT AND HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE OTHERS?

I volunteer at a park district, close to where I live and I help coach group of girls with basketball and football cheer. I just want to put the smile on their face when they do an amazing sport that everyone thinks is not a sport.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS?

My accomplishments are small, but huge in my eyes. My biggest one in cheer would have to be my BHS because I used to never have enough arm strength since my medical issues, and now that I have been doing everything the strength is back.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A CHEERFIT AMBASSADOR?

My favorite part has to be the support group that it has become. It’s not just about being an ambassador . . . it’s about being in a community that will love and support you no matter what!

. .get the confidence I need to love myself!

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

Last season I was on a Level 1 Mini team for a gym in upstate New York, called NY Icons Rising Stars. At the beginning of competition season after our 1st competition I was at a Christmas party playing with my friends and I dislocated and fractured my right elbow. I was devastated that I would be out for minimum 12 weeks – the bulk of my competition season of my last year on this mini team.

Although my arm was only in a splint for 12 days, when they took the splint off I had lost the ability to fully stretch my elbow/arm and also bear any weight on my arm. I immediately began physical therapy and I would go home and do my exercises every day as instructed, and some days were better than others. My arm would get tired and very sore, but I never stopped or skipped a day. I was so diligent with my physical therapy and exercises that I was able to return to cheer for after only 9 weeks.

I immediately began to tumble and was able to throw my back handspring like I was never injured – something a lot of people feared I would be afraid to do. That was the best feeling . . . feeling strong and no fear of tumbling. My coach was apprehensive about throwing me back in the routine after only 9 weeks, especially since I would only have 1 practice before the next scheduled competition . . .

. . .but my passion for cheerleading and my determination to strengthen my arm really helped me get back in and help my team win that competition.

We went on to have an undefeated season and eventually won the US FINALS Championship Challenge!

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

When I was 8, I injured my foot and couldn’t participate at Cheer Camp or choreography. I was so heartbroken not being able to be cheer and tumble for almost 3 months.

We had a trainer who would come to our practices and he modified our conditioning workouts so that I could still participate. Once I was cleared to start really training again, I pushed myself so hard to get back to the level that I was at before my injury. I did go through a mental block after that. It was one of the hardest things in my life because I couldn’t understand why my mind was stopping me from doing what my body knew I could do.

I finally realized one day that I was the only one that could get me through this!

I had amazing coaches, teammates, and family that were routing for me, but I had the strength inside all along to believe in myself enough to get past it.

Never give up on yourself!

This is my 7th season cheering and I’m going into 7th grade!

I started cheering late. I had just turned 9 and had tried several traditional sports, dance, and a little gymnastics. It was in gymnastics that I discovered my love of tumbling. That led me to cheer.

Being fit helps me to be the best I can be because it keeps me strong and strong is healthy.

Being fit is important to me because my dad has MS and seeing how he fights through challenges everyday encourages me to be stronger and healthier to help him.

I’ve only been cheering for 2 full years and am thankful for my coaches and team mates that push me and encourage me every day.

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY VOLUNTEER OR NONPROFIT AND HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE OTHERS?

I am involved in the Miss America Star Princess mentoring program. This program pairs up young girls with local title holders, within the Miss America organization who mentor them in Community Service. Alongside my mentors I have raised money for Alzheimers Awareness, Meals on Wheels, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and my personal favorite Pediatric Cancer patients. I was lucky enough to be paired with a contestant that went on to be Miss NY and I traveled, with my mom and sister to see her compete on the Miss America Stage.

My family is also very active in raising money for the National MS Society and walking with our team in the MS Walk each year. I try to inspire others through my good work and always encourage people to be the very best version of themselves! An original is worth more than a coy.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

My accomplishments in cheer are that I started at 9 on a Level one Jr team and by me second year I was part of a level 3 Sr team. I also got my punch front on my very first try!

My personal accomplishments are ones relating to my community service. The past two summers I took part in the “Million Books for Hope” summer reading challenge. People sponsored me to read over the summer and the money raised went to a Pediatric Cancer research group. I have raised over $600 each year!

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At 4 months old I was diagnosed with a serious heart disease called cardio-myopathy. Doctors told my parents that I would not make it past age 4.

At age 4 I went to try out to be a cheerleader something doctors told me I couldn’t do. During that time, I was still on the heart transplant list that I had been on since age 1. My mother and coaches believed in me and pushed me very hard, and I also tried very hard because I love cheering.

My first year cheering I cried everyday because I didn’t want to exercise/run etc, but wanted to cheer so my coaches kept pushing me. After cheering for two years, at age 6 I went to get a small procedure done that allowed the doctors to see what was happening inside of my heart. After the procedure, doctors told my mother that my heart was so much better and that I could now be able to go inactive on the heart transplant list if I still took my medicine everyday.

My mother strongly believed that cheering/exercising on a regular basis got me to that point.

I am now 8 years old and although I still take medications daily and my heart is still not as normal as it could be, I am still inactive in the transplant list and doctors said I might not need a new heart until college, but everyday I push to not need a heart at all just medicine and I believe if I stay fit that will happen .Cheering is something I love to do and to be a great cheerleader I have to train hard and stay fit and exercising almost everyday made me the great cheerleader I am today!!!
