I did not fit in with the kids in my year at school. One of the girls told everyone not to talk to me or be my friend – this made me feel lonely and sad.

Last year I was questioned why my dad was black and why I didn’t have straight hair!!! I wasn’t upset about my dad, but I wanted to know why I was different? I kept asking my mom if I could straighten my hair and dye it blonde – I felt like something was wrong with me.

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A TIME YOU FELT BULLIED AND HOW IT MADE YOU FEEL?

I was in the first grade last year and I was bullied by classmates and my teacher and it made me sad because your teacher is supposed to help you and make you feel safe, and that wasn’t the case.

It got so bad that I got injured on the playground – a student hit me in the head with a swing and nobody did anything about it. . . not the principal, assistant principal or my teacher, and that hurt my feelings because I was a very new student and that hurt a lot.

Now I’m in the 2nd grade and I have a new and nicer teacher who doesn’t tolerate bullying.

Even though I was bullied the first day of school after my parents talked to the teacher, it doesn’t happen anymore which makes me happy!

If you are getting bullied, tell your parents and don’t wait and be quiet because otherwise nothing will be done about it! So tell your parents and your teacher and talk about what’s going on and it will be so much better – you will feel better about it!

HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE AND SUPPORT YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS AND TEAMMATES?

l like be there for my family and teammates and if they need to talk, I’m here for them. If they have something important to them, I’m there to show my support!

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS?

I love that I passed the 1st grade and that I made it to level 1 in gymnastics. I’m working very hard to be the best person and cheerleader I can be and I accomplished that and I’m so proud of myself!

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT BEING A CHEERFIT AMBASSADOR?

I’m so happy CHEERFIT is letting me express myself and speak out on something that’s close to my heart and I thank them so much for this opportunity.

Sammie Litten: Crushing the Stereotype

Sammie Litten: Crushing the Stereotype

When you think of a cheerleader, what do you think of? A strong, confident athlete with great work ethic and determination, right? Well, I know you and I feel that way. But some people still have that stereotypical idea of cheerleaders as peppy girls who just smile and wave at the football games. But we’re so much more than that these days. So what are those stereotypes you still hear floating around?

Cheerleaders aren’t athletes.

Uh, you try and be thrown ten feet in the air and flip and spin around twice. Or throw a human being with one arm and then catch their feet again in ONE HAND. Yeah how about now?

Men shouldn’t be cheerleaders.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Did you know the first cheer squad consisted of all men? Yep. Now-a-days it’s completely normal for a team to consist of half men (minus all-girl groups, of course). On my team had manly men, men who were passionate about the sport, men who came from football teams and just wanted to throw people in the air, and men who could tumble better than every girl on the team. Men and cheerleading go hand in hand these days, get it….hand in hand?

Cheerleaders are dumb.

Most teams today require a certain GPA or have standards as to what grades we have to keep up to be on the team. I know in college, we had to complete so many hours of study hall and if your grades were still slipping your hours were bumped up. Fail out? Ineligible which means, yep, no cheering for you. This means there’s no stupid cheerleaders these days people.

All cheerleaders do is yell from the sidelines.

False. We not only cheer on the sidelines, we entertain and pump up the crowd. We have a job to keep our fans entertained and spirited no matter how well our team is doing. But there’s also competitive cheerleading which many people don’t realize. We perform routines with tough tumbling passes, sky high acrobatics, and sometimes dances and cheers. It’s so much more than just being a sideline cheerleader.

Cheerleading isn’t even dangerous.

A study by the Journal of Pediatrics said that cheerleading is the most dangerous sport for females because of the high risks of concussions and catastrophic injuries. Because there’s so much more acrobatics and gymnastics involved in cheerleading today the risk of injury is greater which definitely makes it a dangerous sport!

And then the age old stereotype….Cheerleading isn’t a sport.

I went to a division one school, and I was considered an athlete at my school which meant I technically “played a sport”. A sport is defined as: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Not only do we physically exert ourselves WHILE performing skills, but we do it on a field, court, and on a competition floor! Yeah, we’re multi-talented.

So, how can we break these stereotypes of cheerleaders? By working harder than anyone else, doing awesome in school, and showing people we’re more than just pom poms on the sidelines! What do you think are some of the most common stereotypes?

CHEERFIT AMBASSADOR FEATURE: CAMARIE JOHNSON

The CHEERFIT ambassador community is filled with leaders and motivators who all share a passion for fitness, love for cheering and drive to help inspire others.

Our ambassadors share with us their personal stories and obstacles they overcome along the way. We have an amazing community of athletes who fuel their passion and determination with the CHEERFIT lifestyle.

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

My most difficult challenge in cheer has been myself – my mental blocks and self doubts.

I am the only one who stands between accomplishing a certain skill. I have had to find my center focus and believe in myself as mush as my coaches believe in me. I practice non stop there is not a moment that goes by that I am not active in some way shape or form. I have goals and dreams for myself and I won’t stop until I they are met.

Fitness is so important in my journey – it helps me stay active, strong and healthy.

It helps correct my form and posture to throw a beautiful back tuck. It helps keep myself and my flyer safe when she’s up in the air. Overall the way it makes me feel is priceless . . .

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY VOLUNTEER OR NONPROFIT AND HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE OTHERS?

I am also a spirit box ambassador and I am promoting the Be Kind movement – I have little business cards to hand out for those that are sad, upset or need a friend to talk to. Everyone has a story to tell, so why not be kind . . . we don’t know what they may be going through!

My favorite part about being a CHEERFIT ambassador is the getting fit part and being able to share that with others and also challenging myself to do more than I did yesterday.

HOW HAS BEING AN AMBASSADOR HELPED YOU?

Oh wow, it has helped me with so much, for starters – believing in myself! I can do anything I set my mind to and I have done just that. It has helped my tumbling, I have so much more strength to throw a tumble pass. I am stronger and am able to hold up my flyer longer. It has motivated me to keep going and never look back.

If you’re on the fence about it, just do it! You won’t regret it. You are automatically welcomed in like family.
