I am a base with Eliteheat Allstars Fireflies I have been with them since 2013. I love them all!

We are the only special needs team  in north Tonawanda, NY. My friend told me about cheerleading in 2013 and I’ve loved it since I  started with them . . . it is better than dancing classes. I love cheerleading season with all the training and practices and the competitions.

I am the first ever CHEERFIT ambassador at the gym I cheer for. I am also a firefighter daughter in my community – my dad loves being a cheer dad.

CHEERFIT AMBASSADOR FEATURE: ADDISON NASH

The CHEERFIT ambassador community is filled with leaders and motivators who all share a passion for fitness, love for cheering and drive to help inspire others.

Our ambassadors share with us their personal stories and obstacles they overcome along the way. We have an amazing community of athletes who fuel their passion and determination with the CHEERFIT lifestyle. In addition to cheerleading, many of our ambassadors are committed to having a positive impact on their community through other special causes.

This week, we meet Addison, a cheerleader who is determined to never give up, and also an advocate for the Down Syndrome Community. We are amazed by her dedication to the cause and are so very proud to have her as a CHEERFIT ambassador – we share with you our ‘Ambassador of the Week Feature’ with Addison Nash!

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

This story is about my daughter Addison and her struggle with tumble mental blocks . She’s in her gym Sunday – Thursday and begs to stay for extra tumble classes almost every week. She has her ups and downs and has dealt with her fair share of “mental blocks” when it comes to tumbling but this little girl never gives up.

She works her absolute hardest until she’s confident with her tumbling again.

She had a bad block literally a few weeks before her very first competition in November and she was so worried that she would be taken off her team or that she wouldn’t throw the pass at her comp. She got in the gym and worked every day making sure she worked on everything she would do and eventually over came the block.

I’m so proud of her drive to never give up on herself.

– CHEERFIT Ambassador Addison Nash, written by her Mom 🙂

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY VOLUNTEER OR NONPROFIT AND HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE OTHERS?

Addison is a huge advocate for the Down Syndrome Community. Her little brother, Asher is 17 months and has DS. You might have seen him and Addison on the news recently. He has became quite famous. She got her school and cheer gym to wear blue and yellow in October for Down Syndrome Awareness Month. She also created a video to explain Down Syndrome to her peers at school.

One of Addison’s cheer comps is Spirit or Hope in Charlotte, NC. Her gym collects donations to go towards the foundation. Addison and her best friend on her cheer team walked around in the cold during Christmas break raising money on their own for the Spirit of Hope foundation.

Addison is an amazing big sister to her brother Asher. She is not only is biggest advocate, but his best friend. She is excited that her gym is getting a special needs team because she wants to volunteer and help. She hopes her brother will one day be on the team.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

In cheer, Addison is a level 4 tumbler. She has worked so hard to get where she is today!

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I have many chronic illnesses and health issues which always made me and others think cheerleading was not possible for me. I have Elhers Danlos Syndrome which is the “glue” that holds your body together is too stretchy and causes dislocations, pain, other health issues and many more things. I also have a paralyzed stomach (gastroparesis), orthostatic intolerance which means my blood pressure doesn’t stabilize well and means I can often go lightheaded and also am deaf in my right ear. Everyone always told me that cheerleading isn’t something that’s possible and that it’s too dangerous and I won’t be able to physically do it.

I didn’t care and did it anyway.

By doing that, I’ve learnt that anything really is possible if you just try and put everything into it, whilst making adaptations that work for you. Having a supportive team has helped me a lot and given me a new family. It’s helped to remind me that you can never give up on your goals regardless of what obstacles are put in your way.

Fitness is important regardless of health because it helps keep everything moving and I really notice when I haven’t had cheer or any form of exercise. I notice my health deteriorates and my mood goes down too.

– CHEERFIT Ambassador Sophie Mattes

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY VOLUNTEER OR NONPROFIT AND HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE OTHERS?

I am part of many groups for my conditions where we help and support each other through everything as we understand each other. I make YouTube videos to help support those out there to remind them they are not alone.

Put your mind to whatever you want to achieve and don’t stop till you get there no matter how hard it may seem. It’s worth it.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS?

I recently got my back walkover back, which for me is massive as tumbling is really hard for me due to my weak joints. I’ve also been asked to try out for our level 4 team which is big too!!

I’ve also managed to carry on working through all my health problems which is massive as it’s been a really bumpy journey!!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A CHEERFIT AMBASSADOR?

My favorite part would definitely be the community and second family it brings with it. The positivity that you receive from each and every person really rubs off on you and you get to then put that positivity out there to everyone else.

HOW HAS BEING AN AMBASSADOR HELPED YOU?

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At the end of last season, I was losing weight rapidly, and getting weak. I lost most of my level 2 skills, and we didn’t understand why. I decided not to try out for my Allstar team, because I was always so tired, and I didn’t have the energy to practice or compete.

In June, my parents took me to the doctor to figure out what was wrong with me. After an exam and blood tests I was rushed to Children’s Hospital in Dallas where I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Upon arrival, my blood sugar was over 800 (normal is 100). I spent a week in the hospital cleaning the sugar out of my blood and learning how to live with Type 1 Diabetes. There is no cure. I have to give myself a shot of insulin every time I eat during the day, and before I go to bed at night.

But, soon after diagnosis, I felt so much better. I wasn’t weak and tired. I had energy, and I really missed my Allstar team. My coach let me have a private tryout because he knew how bad I wanted back on the team. Even though I did not have all my level 2 skills back, I promised him I would work hard to get all my skills back before competition season started.

I worked hard to build the muscles in my body back.

Within 3 months I had gained 8 lbs, and all that was muscle. I kept my promise to my coach and my team; before competition season started, I had all of my level 2 skills back, and better than ever before. . .but I didn’t stop working there. Five months later, I have my level 3 skills as well. I was so happy the first day I landed my tuck. Diabetes tried to take that away from me, but I worked to hard to let the disease win. Fitness and diet along with my medications are the only way to stay ahead of my Type 1 Diabetes.

I will WIN!

Hi! My name is Aivree and this is my story. In July of 2012 I started feeling bad and went to the doctor, After several visits and a trip to Texas Children’s I was diagnosed with Henoch Schonelin Purpura. It’s not genetic or contagious. It causes/can cause multiple issues like fevers, being sick to your stomach, severe joint swelling and pain, hypertension, renal failure and it cause your capillaries to burst and bleed out under your skin.

I was in a wheel chair on days I couldn’t walk. I had to wear house shoes for months due to swelling in my feet. I missed school due to fevers and missed Halloween while being tested for intussusception of the intestines. I had these issues off and on for 18 months.

Starting Cheer helped me strengthen my body again. But it really strengthened my mind. I started thinking more positively. I had goals in cheer I wanted to achieve that I had to work hard for.

Cheer gave me a purpose and a desire to push myself to get stronger and better.

My team and coaches gave me the encouragement to become better than I ever thought I could. Then this past year I found CHEERFIT and it has just enhanced it all. With monthly meetings and workouts that target certain areas, I have continued to grow and achieve more goals. I fell in love with this sport that gave me my life back and with CHEERFIT on my side nothing is impossible!

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I went through a whole lot to get where I am today, and motivation and fitness is what helped me overcome those rough times.

I was once injured at a cheer competition my second year of cheer, I pulled four different muscles throughout my leg and I couldn’t cheer for several months because I almost needed surgery. I was really upset that I had to sit out from cheer and once my team got a fill in I was terrified. I was very motivated to heal so thats exactly what I did. I stretched, exercised, went to physical therapy every week and then after a few months, I was back to cheering and now I’m getting fit and I’m very happy with my body.

I LOVE CHEERFIT ! 💜

I believe that anyone can make a goal and eventually achieve it! I made a goal when I was 6 or 7 years old to cheer at Rockstar cheer Greenville, look where I am now. . .13 years old, and guess what – I cheer at Rockstar now!

How to Prep for Cheer Camp

How to Prep for Cheer Camp

Cheer camp is an exciting time for an athlete whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a first-year on the squad. It’s about team bonding, learning, hard work, and most importantly having FUN!

Although, the fun can come to a screeching halt if you’re not prepared. These are some tips and tools you can use to make sure you’re that you stand out at camp this year!

As an athlete you know that you won’t be good at whatever sport it is you do if you don’t what? Practice, practice, practice! This is true when you’re preparing for camp. Just because tryouts are over doesn’t mean that your work is done…it’s only just begun! You should be working every day to make sure you’re in tip top shape for camp. By working every day this includes three main things: physical training, nutritional training, and emotional training. Let’s break these down…

Physical preparation:

Before camp you need to make sure you’re doing some sort of conditioning. That means adding running, tumbling, and stunting into your weekly schedule. Get a group of friends together and work on your stunting a couple days a week or practice your tumbling at your cheer gym every Tuesday and Thursday night. Be sure to work out in between so you build up stamina. Camp is a non-stop event for cheerleaders and you need to make sure you can keep up with everyone. And one of the biggest tips I can give is to practice your game day routines! Know ALL of your motions, practice your facial expressions and know every single dance move. You don’t want to be the one that missed the high-V in the fight song, how embarrassing! You’ll basically be stunting, tumbling, cheering, and moving 99% of the day so you need to be conditioning and building up your stamina every single day!

Nutritional preparation:

Like I said, camp is a 24-hour job so there’s no time to be tired or sluggish. To avoid an energy bust start eating a little bit better a few weeks before camp. Skip the McDonald’s runs (ugh, can’t believe I’m saying that I know) and choose something a little more nutritional like fish or some whole grain pasta. White meat chicken and vegetables is one of my favorite meals and is great for you! Getting the right kinds of sugars and nutrients in your body will help keep you energized and ready to take on each day of camp!

Mental Preparation:

You need to be mentally prepared for the week/weekend that’s ahead of you. You’re going to be critiqued by staff members, your coaches, and teammates which can take a toll on you. Remember, the pressure is on for your coaches as well so they’ll probably be cracking down on your motions and performance so they look like the best coach there. Clear your head, and be ready to work hard. Having a good, positive attitude going into camp will only make your experience that much better!
