Top 3 Tips to Build Confidence

Top 3 Tips to Build Confidence

Parent’s I get it, you want your cheerleader to be on the best team, and cheerleaders, you want to be on the team with the highest skills. Remember, you have to work toward each skill and goal in order to be the best for yourself and your team, that means what ever team you happen to be placed on. Let’s talk about some tips for overcoming some physical and mental blocks.

STAY FOCUSED

To be successful you have to put 95% of your focus into the mental part of the sport along with the 5% of physical portion.  It is so important to stay focused on the skill at hand you are working on. Keep your head in the game, and don’t be distracted by other things going on around you.

DON’T JUMP AHEAD

So many times I have seen cheerleaders lose focus on the mental part of this sport, simply because they aren’t living and focusing in the moment, they are jumping ahead and that could potentially be grounds for failure.  You want to put your energy in the moment and what you are placing your emphasis on at that time.

REMEMBER TO BELIEVE

One of the most important things I always tell the girls on the team, is “You have to believe in yourself, you have to know you can do it in your mind and in your heart.”  It’s one thing to physically be working on the skills, it’s another thing to have that self-doubt putting that fear into yourself. You need to have to the self-confidence in yourself to know that you CAN do what you are working at.

Don’t forget to join the CHEERFIT Movement with your cheerleader and discover that you can also be #CHEERFITSTRONG.

Does your cheerleader need a confidence boost?

Does your cheerleader need a confidence boost?

Ever hear the phrase, “confidence is key“? It’s oh so true..confidence is that secret ingredient that will help your cheerleader advance their skills, bust out of that mental block, and truly SHINE both on and off the mat! If you’re sensing some frustration or stuck in a mental block with your athlete, we’ve got the answers for you!

In this blog, I’m personally sharing my top 3 tips to help your cheerleader stay motivated and rock that confidence 24/7!!

TIP #1: STAY MOTIVATED, HERE’S HOW

The trick to staying motivated is setting goals and having a plan. Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for the MOTIVATIONAL PLANK HOLD! (PS: this is one of my personal fav’ go-to CHEERFIT tips!)

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JPeMQZ_4BIU" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This is how it works:

  1. Write down your top 3 summer goals
  2. Hold a plank (30-60 seconds)
  3. While in the plank, repeat your goals out loud and visualize each new skill in your head (yes all while in a plank)

Parents, this is a great one for you to do with your athletes and lead by example : )

TIP #2: MOUNTAIN CLIMBER CHALLENGE BUSTER

Yes, say that 10 times fast : ) Ok, so this now is what you want to do right after the motivational plank challenge. First, we want to set goals, then we want to BUST THROUGH any negative thoughts so our goals can happen!

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ObsdSlgvK9w" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Here is how:

  1. Mountain Climber time (30-60 seconds)
  2. While climbing those mountains you want to bust through any negative thoughts that creep in
  3. Tell yourself, “I’ve got this!” “There is nothing that can hold me back!” “I am CHEERFIT STRONG!!

Parents again, time to show your cheerleader that negative thoughts mean NOTHING. We’d recommend doing this with them!

TIP #3: BE CHEERFIT STRONG

Coaches Tips For Tryouts

Coaches Tips For Tryouts

Here are some DOs and DON’Ts for TRYOUTS of 2018!

I get it, tryouts can be stressful – but they don’t have to be! Follow my top tricks and tips to make this year’s tryouts stressfree and fun for both you and your cheerleader!

DOs:

  1. Take extra tumbling classes or privates to clean up your current skills. You can take extra privates at your gym or virtually with Danielle (check it out)!!

2. Look presentable. When you feel good, you do good! We are looking for you to be confident in the level you are trying out for. A polished, clean look adds to confidence and overall presentation.

Gabby looking presentable for tryouts.

3. Get a good night’s sleep and eat healthy the days leading up to tryouts. Getting sleep and eating healthy will help you stay focused and energized.

4. Come to tryouts with an open mind. Just because you were a flyer at your old gym, does not mean you will be a flyer again.

5. Deep stretch the days leading up to tryouts. You might be able to accomplish that needle or a hyper extended jump if you really stick to a regimen. See my last blog on improving flexibility!

Amarys stretching at home.

6. Trust the process! The coaches are the experts and we take a lot into consideration when putting teams together.

DONTs:

1. DON’T Take extra tumbling classes or privates to try to get new skills in a rush for tryouts. Coaches are looking for proper technique or “compete-able” skills. We’d rather see a beautiful specialty level 2 pass, as opposed to a round off tuck landing to your knees.

2. DON’T come to tryouts in non-cheer sneakers, hair in face, or wearing jewelry; these are not only unsafe, but also a distraction.

3. DON’T come to tryouts with a cheeseburger, candy, and soda in your bag for break. Your energy will crash and you won’t feel 100%. Instead, stick with water and healthy options such as fresh veggies or a piece of fruit.

4. DON’T refuse a stunting position when asked to try basing or flying in a particular group. Leave it to the coaches to “play around” until we find a perfect fit for you.

5. DON’T skimp out on stretching. You can easily pull a muscle if you haven’t been in the gym in a few weeks and haven’t warmed up those muscles properly before try outs!

6. DON’T bad mouth the gym, coaches, or other athletes based on where anyone or yourself should be placed. Hold your chin high, be a good team player, and most of all, have fun!

Thinking About Being a Team Mom?

Thinking About Being a Team Mom?

“I’m one of those mom’s who stick around during my daughter’s cheer practice.”

My oldest daughter, who is 13 hates it, my younger daughter Savannah, who is a CHEERFIT Ambassador, age 10, loves it. I like watching what they are working on, how they are progressing, etc.

BECOMING A TEAM MOM

I think after being around so much, I kind of asked if the team needed a Team Mom to take care of correspondence, help coordinate things, etc. For all the Cheer Team Moms out there, this can be such a rewarding thing! This has by far been fun, emotional at times, and so much more than just sending out reminder emails for the coaches. Like everything, you get what you put into it.

Yes, I totally admit I live vicariously through my daughter’s cheerleading. Thank you to their Coaches for allowing me to travel this journey with them. Mom’s…you can bring so much to your daughter’s team. I have sat down with them and told them about my experience with Traumatic Brain Injury (the reaction and emotions were heartwarming and priceless), we have created get well cards for injured coaches, I’ve surprised the girls with a candy table at Easter, Valentines party, motivational quotes in our group chat, and hand out photo collage’s they can hang in their locker or at school after a competition.

The ideas are limitless, and the girls love the encouragement.

Think about volunteering to be a Team Mom for the new cheer season! I promise you won’t regret it.

Don’t forget to join the CHEERFIT Movement with your cheerleader and discover that you can also be #CHEERFITSTRONG.

Top 5 Ideas to Pump Up Your Team for Summit

Top 5 Ideas to Pump Up Your Team for Summit

The team earned that coveted bid and everyone is jumping up and down for joy! The excitement is overwhelming… coaches start thinking about new additions to the routine, athletes are dreaming of both Mickey as well as winning that ring and parents want to know how they can help.

Answer…..team gifts and spirit!

Going to Disney World for Summit is an EXPERIENCE and the athletes are sure to make memories that will last a lifetime. Teams will be decked out in lots of Summit gear showing off their gym spirit and their accomplishment of making it to the Summit.

Here are the top 5 ideas for great ways to pump up the team and get them ready.

1. SPIRIT PARTIES

Think of a cute idea and play off the theme. We’ve done root beer floats after practice, “We’re Rootin’ for You. Absolutely inexpensive and made the point that we support them 100% and know how hard they are working.

2. PICK ME UPS

We all know the pressure gets intense as the Summit practices continue. Consider giving out small pick me ups to lift the athlete’s spirits after those hard, grueling practices. Nothing big or expensive but it let’s them know everyone is in this together. We love the #CHEERFITSTRONG bands as a reminder to our athletes that they are confident, strong, and can accomplish anything they set their mind to!

3.T-SHIRTS & TANK TOPS

Florida is HOT! Team tanks are always a hit and a great easy way to commemorate the experience as well as make your team stand out. Lots of cute ideas on Pinterest and whether you focus on Summit or sporting your team name, it definitely bonds your athletes.

4. TRAVEL ITEMS

Teams come from all over including internationally to compete at the Summit so think about toothbrush holders, baggage tags, toiletry bags, uniform bags, etc. These gifts will not only promote spirit but come in very useful.

5. PARK NECESSITIES

The athletes are bound to want to join in on the park fun so you might want to consider giving athletes items that they will NEED during park days. Items like fanny packs, drawstring bags, handheld fans, visors and sunglasses work great as spirit gifts.

The most important thing is to HAVE FUN, cherish the moments and make lots of memories!

SALLY PAZ

Sally Paz is proud mom of Ava. While her “real” job is in educational administration, she spends a huge amount of her time doing the crazy cheer mom thing. Since 2015 when Ava began All-Star Cheer, she has been team mom for two years and a member of the Executive Board of the APEX Booster Club for one year. This year Ava will be competing at Summit in the Senior Coed 4.2 and the International Junior 3.

Busy Schedule? Here’s how to Stay Organized!

Busy Schedule? Here’s how to Stay Organized!

Now let’s face it… EVERY Cheer Parent is truly a SUPER HERO!

Whether it’s getting kids to cheer practice, school, or competitions… these schedules can get pretty CRAZY!

Luckily we have some AMAZING TIPS on how to STAY ORGANIZED and be able to GET EVERYTHING DONE!

1.  START TO SCHEDULE EVERYTHING!

I rely heavily on my phone and calendar to get everything straight. I am one of those moms that will completely forget that I have to do anything that day until it is time to go. I make sure everything is always set in my phone as soon as I find out about it, then I write it on the calendar in the kitchen at home so she can check it as well. The calendar in my phone is also color coordinated. Each event has its own color, whether it is Cheer, archery, doctor appointment, or her dad’s weekend. For archery tournaments and practice I also use my calendar and phone!

STAYING ORGANIZED IS KEY! WHETHER IT’S YOUR PHONE, PLANNER, OR STICKY NOTES; STAYING TRUE TO YOUR SCHEDULE WILL HELP YOU THROUGH YOUR DAY! : )

2.  FORGETFUL? USE ALARMS!

My daughter has a phone with an alarm that will go off forty-five minutes prior to cheer practice. This allows her to know when to get ready! I have another alarm that will go off fifteen minutes from when we need to leave. With all these alarms we are able to get through the day right on schedule. I can also get her one year-old brother and his bag ready before we head out.

ALARMS CAN BE YOUR BEST FRIEND AND LIFE SAVER!

3.  KEEP YOUR AREA ORGANIZED

We have specific places for EVERYTHING!

Practices and competitions require LOTS of specific items and sometimes it can get a little hard to keep track of everything! But we were able to find the PERFECT SOLUTION!

  1. Bows
  2. Practice Shirts
  3. Practice Uniforms
  4. Cheer Shoes
  5. Competition Uniform
  6. Team Cheer Bag
  7. Water Bottle
  8. Extra Accessories

WE WERE ABLE TO ORGANIZE ALL THE ITEMS IN HER CLOSET RIGHT BEFORE WE START OUR DAY!

Before we go we always double check all our bags the night before before we go to competitions, also the morning of JUST IN CASE!

MELLISA GUTHERY

I am a mother of two amazing kids. One is a 9 year old, crazy, cheer kid, the other just turned one and never sits still. I was a truck driver for 10 years and now I drive a school bus. My daughter has been in cheer for 5 years and we have been working out together since she was five years old. CheerFit lets us continue to work out together while home with her baby brother.
