CHEERFIT AMBASSADOR FEATURE: KAYLA MYERS

The CHEERFIT ambassador community is filled with leaders and motivators who all share a passion for fitness, love for cheering and drive to help inspire others.

Our ambassadors share with us their personal stories and obstacles they overcome along the way. We have an amazing community of athletes who fuel their passion and determination with the CHEERFIT lifestyle. They pride themselves on guiding others – they encourage friends and family to go after their goals and help them along the way. This week, we learn about Kayla, an all star cheerleader with a big heart and best friend to her sister. We are proud to share with you our ‘Ambassador of the Week Feature’ with Kayla Myers.

SHARE WITH US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AND WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU!

I would like to share how I helped my younger sister achieve something amazing. My sister was diagnosed with Autism, specifically Asperger’s, when she was five years old. Things people take for granted are very difficult for her as change is hard and she prefers to be alone. The older we grew, the further apart we became as we are polar opposites. At the conclusion of my junior year, I realized my sister would have a hard time when I left for college. This realization sparked within me a desire to improve our relationship and give her the tools to grow and develop relationships when I leave.

The only way I knew to connect with my sister was through my love of cheerleading. After much convincing or as she would say “forcing her”, she agreed to tryout for our high school team. I am still surprised as she avoids people and has difficulty with her motor skills and loud sounds. My sister was terrified the days leading up to tryouts; she wanted to quit.

I continued to be patient and practice with her while being an encouragement.

With continual practice she began to get the hang of it. I remember when she first did a toe touch correctly how her face lit up like never before. I will always remember that day as I had never seen my sister confident since she had previously only questioned herself.

When tryouts came, my sister was frantic. She could not stop stressing and was terrified to face the judges. Although she was scared, she persevered and made the team. The judges told our coach that my sister looked like an “All-American Cheerleader”. I am unable to explain how proud I am of her as she had the courage to go outside of her comfort zone and face her fears.

The feeling of knowing I have helped her become a cheerleader and gain confidence is one of the best feelings I have ever experienced; it was so worth the effort. The entire experience has caused us to grow closer and connect through the sport of cheer and has ultimately shown my sister her diagnosis does not define her.

The picture I selected for this interview is my favorite picture of my sister and me. I am the brunette and my sister, Emily Myers, is the one with the glasses. She is always there with me through all my accomplishments and I want her to know I understand I could never have gotten as far as I have without her support.
